Latinas Poderosa: Powerful Latinas Making an Impact By: Lupe Llerenas

March is Women’s History Month, a month where we commemorate and celebrate the vital role of women.

Now more than ever, women are making a splash in the television and movie industry of the United States. Acting, directing, producing? They’re doing it all!

So in honor of this powerful month, let’s take a look at five influential Latinas in Hollywood.

Salma Hayek

Salma began her career in Mexico and later crossover into Hollywood TV and film. For decades, the Mexican actress has built her work around all things entertainment. Along with that, she’s also devoted her time to charitable work to help raise awareness on violence against women and discrimination against immigrants.

Gina Rodriguez

Gina Rodriguez gained critical acclaim success in her 2014 series, “Jane the Virgin.” That same show gained the actress three nominations at the Golden Globes, in which she won in 2015. During her time on “Jane the Virgin” she managed to receive executive producer status for the last three seasons on the show, as well as directing a few episodes. Since then, she became a member of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and higher education.

Jennifer Lopez

Singer, actress, dancer, producer, fashion designer, and businesswoman. Jennifer Lopez does it all! While she started in the industry as a Fly Girl in the nineties on the sketch comedy show, “In Living Color,” she really blew up on the film scene in 1997 with her iconic performance as Selena Quintanilla. Since then, J.Lo’s career has been on the rise. Over the years, she’s been recognized for her outstanding work in the entertainment industry, while always remaining true to her Puerto Rican roots.

Becky G

Aside from music, film, and TV career, Becky G helps those around her. The global superstar is a triple threat dedicating her platform to causes and topics that are close to her heart. At just 25-years-old, Becky has been involved with immigrant issues, along with the Make-A-Wish foundation and Global Citizen to end hunger in America.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria rose to fame thanks to work on the series, “Desperate Housewives” in 2004. However, the most important role the actress plays off-screen is in her endeavors within the Hispanic and charitable communities. She has been involved with immigration issues and political activism.

Safe to say, Latinas are making a name for themselves in Hollywood and, at the same time, they are using their work to speak up and raise awareness on important issues. Now, while these are just a few powerful Latinas, we want to know your favorite.
