KAROL G “KG0516” Album Is Topping The Charts By: Lupe Llerenas

Colombia’s Karol G is a chart-topping, award-winning vocalist known for her soulful mix of reggaetón, pop, and dance-oriented R&B. As the “princess of reggaetón,” she combines the melodic instincts of a singer with such a dynamic flow. She became one of reggaetón’s breakout stars of the late 2010s by bringing this mixture to some of the most forward-thinking beats of any genre. Her collaborative appearances on singles with other urban hip-hop and reggaetón artists including Nicki Minaj, Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam, J Balvin, Maluma, and Pitbull have garnered hundreds of millions of views.

Most recently, the 30-year-old delivered her third studio album “KG0516” via Universal Latin. The 16-track project explores a scope of musical genres, including reggaeton, pop, country, bachata, and regional Mexican styling. The album includes previously released songs “Tusa” with Nicki Minaj, “Ay DiOs Mío!,” “Bichota,” and “Location.”

Karol says the album’s title came after a flight number, along with her initials KG and the numbers representing May 16, 2006, the date she signed her first album deal. “The intention of the album’s title is to welcome her fans on the flight to her new artistic era, where she transcends new musical dimensions,” she told fans during a live Q&A with Apple Music.

Overall, I enjoyed Karol G’s “KG0516.” I really loved how each song on the project represents a different emotion. For example, on “El Barco,” Karol details a story about feeling some sort of betrayal and when it’s time to apologize, it’s too late. “You turned your back, but the boat left, and your photos I threw away; since I did, everything that was black and white now has color…”

“El Makinon” with Mariah Angeliq, reminds us who the real boss is (la verdadera bichota). It gives us those futuristic reggaetón vibes that we love from Karol. In “200 Copas,” Karol shares her best advice as a friend after having a heartbreak. “Bichota” really sets the tone for this album. Giving us a fierce attitude, fierce beats, and fierce lyrics.

“Leyendas” is another stand-out track from the project. It features some of the biggest pioneers in reggaetón’s history: Ivy Queen, Wisin y Yandel, Zion, Nicky Jam, and Alberto Stylee. For nearly six minutes, the song pays tribute to the genre of reggaetón. Not to mention “Location”and “Tusa,” both catchy and set the mood to get any party started.

If you haven’t yet listened to Karol G’s latest album “KG0516,” press play and enjoy the new music vibes from our favorite Bichota.
