Gen-Z Vs. Millennials Fashion One Jean At A Time By: Jasmine Perry

Remember when bell bottoms were out and skinny jeans were in? I do. Did you ever sew your bootcut jeans so you can own a pair of skinny jeans? Well, I did. The Gen-Z generation from 1997 to 2012 have ditched skinny jeans and brought back flare jeans from the early 90s. However, that’s not all they’ve revived.

In high school, the way you dressed said a lot about you, and just like fashion, millennials considered stereotype fashion to be either scene kids, jocks, preppy, or wangsters, depending on where you live. As for Gen-Z, they now consider stereotypical fashion to be Vsco girl, E-Girl, Soft Girl, or Hypebae as a new trend.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, fashion trends come and go and as much as they are cringe-worthy, new trends always grow on us. We just didn’t think they would take us back to memory lane.

As a millennial, I can speak for other millennials that skinny jeans are perfect for any occasion. Yes, we started with low-rise skinny jeans, but we’ve made high-rise and mid-rise skinny jeans the best pair of bottoms in our wardrobes.

You can pair skinny jeans or jeggings with everything. For instance, if you want to wear a crop top, fitted top, or a loose top, a pair of skinny jeans balance the outfit out. As for a pair of what are called boyfriend jeans, you’ll either have to pair them with a fitted or a crop top. Just how reality star Kylie Jenner rocked these boyfriend jeans with a white crop top and oversized leather jacket.

However, if you’re trying to go for a baggy look, that’s where the Gen-Z fashion comes in. Oversized flannels and oversized sweaters have made a comeback and they are being paired with loose jeans giving the illusion of a “comfy outfit.” For example, Billie Eillish is the queen of baggy clothes. The Gen-Z artist even represents what Gen-Z fashion is when it comes to being fashionably comfortable.

Do you remember rapper MC Hammer, the one with the loose joggers? Well, those joggers are trending but in other fabrics such as leather and denim. These bottoms have a crunch at the waist and on both ankles – talk about déjà vu.

Now bell-bottoms are trending again but for some reason, they’ve come out with a new loose look called wide-leg jeans. Sure, they are cute but are they for everyday comfort? I’ll be honest, I bought a light-colored pair and I paired them with a mocha bodysuit and leopard sandals and I felt as if I was lounging around in jeans. However, you can dress them up with a pair of heels or sneakers for a sporty look or as the Gen-Z say “Athleisure” look.

Although wide-leg jeans are in every store right now, the real question is, could skinny jeans go away for good? Skinny jeans have brought out the feminine side of women as in hugging every curve from extra small to 3X, in which they’ve even become a girl’s best friend from a wide range in age. Therefore, while Gen-Z pairs their outfits with Nike Air Force 1s and Dr. Martens chunky boots, just remember these shoes can also be paired with those skinny jeans sitting in your closet.
