Celebrate Pride With These LGBTQ+ Latinx Creatives By: Lupe Llerenas
With June officially here, it marks the 51st celebration of Pride Month!
While we celebrate Pride all 365 days of the year, June is known as the month that the LGBTQ+ community comes together to celebrate being out and proud. In fact, Pride started as a protest outside the Stonewall Inn in 1969 in New York, and thanks to that, the community wouldn’t be as outspoken as it is today without the work of our LGBTQ+ friends.
In honor of Pride Month, I would like to highlight some LGBTQ+ trailblazers in the Latinx entertainment, film, and music scene, who have paved the way for others.
Tanya Saracho
The Mexican American actress and screenwriter is a proud queer. The showrunner for the hit series Vida is dedicated to telling stories from an LGBTQ+ and Latinx perspective.

Jonathan Chàvez
This 22-year-old social star comedian has created a platform of his own. He gives us that Latinx humor in which people can relate and identify with. With his skits, Jonathan turns the most common moments of a Mexican mom into something we can all laugh about.

Sara Ramirez
Most recognized for her role on “Grey’s Anatomy” Sara Ramirez is Mexican, Irish, non-Binary and continues to be a powerful voice for those in the LGBTQ+ community. With her work, she is bringing more visibility and awareness to her non-binary community.

Christian Chavez
Christian Chavez is a Mexican singer and actor, who is best known for his role as Giovanni in the telenovela “Rebelde.” He was also a part of the pop group RBD, and his coming out in 2007 as a proud gay was truly revolutionary.

Ricky Martin
In the late 1990s, Ricky Martin was breaking barriers as a Latinx pop star. However, it wasn’t until 2011 when he shared his truth in his memoir “Me: Ricky Martin,” where he came out gay. Since then, Martin has been a true representation for the LGBTQ+ community.
