How to Spend a Day in San Diego By: Karina Rocha
The city of San Diego has so much to offer all year round. Back in March, I had the opportunity to spend a day in San Diego and all I can say was how gorgeous it was. Spending time at the beaches to finding cute places to eat was the most fun. Here are a few places to check out if you find yourself in San Diego.
Morning Glory
The first stop when getting to San Diego was breakfast, and after doing some research my friends and I ended up at Morning Glory in Little Italy. When I first stepped into the restaurant, I immediately loved the ambiance. It was so lively and stunning because of the pink decor you immediately notice a huge flower-like piece hanging above the bar area when you walk in. I also liked that the restaurant was very open. Aside from the way it looks, the food was really good. I tried the “Morning Glory Fried Rice,” it was delicious, especially with the sunny side eggs on top. Then I tried the Souffle Pancakes, which were some of the best pancakes I’ve ever tasted because I still think about them. They were some of the fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever had, and I also loved that they served them with strawberries and blueberries. So, if you’re ever in San Diego and are looking for a cute breakfast spot, make sure to check out Morning Glory.
Little Italy Mercato
Just a few steps away from Morning Glory was a cute little farmer’s market known as the Little Italy Mercato. It was fun to walk around there and look at all the stands they had. There was a lot of cool art, plants, food, and clothes. My favorite was a jewelry stand because they had a lot of nice rings, bracelets, and necklaces. The jewelry was affordable and good quality which I liked, and there were also so many pieces to choose from. I also enjoyed stopping by one of the book stands because there were so many to choose from and look at. The Little Italy Mercato is a fun place to stop by because of what it offers. It also doesn’t take that long to walk through all of it, so it leaves time for other activities.
Black’s Beach
One of my favorite beaches on this trip was Black’s Beach in La Jolla. To begin with, the views from Black’s Beach are extraordinary because of how far you could see out into the distance. You could also see the cliff even though it was cloudy. But when the sun came out for a while, it was breathtaking to see from the top of the cliffs. I also liked that beach was pretty empty and not too crowded. When I first arrived there, I was in awe of the views; you could be there for a long time and not get tired of looking out into the distance. After spending some time taking in the view I went down to the beach. To get down to the beach it’s a bit of a hike but it’s so worth it because of how beautiful it is down there. The Torrey Pines Gilderport Trail leads you down there. After arriving at the bottom, I just sat and enjoyed hearing the sound of the waves. I find the beach to be very relaxing, so I just took it all in. This beach had some of the calmest waves which made being there even more peaceful. There’s also the option of paragliding for those who are adrenaline junkies.
Holy Matcha
After being at the beach for a while, I wanted something to drink. So, my friends and I decided to check out Holy Matcha. I love matcha, it’s one of my favorite drinks, so I had to go there. Right when I walked in, I noticed how cute it was. The inside was small which made the space feel cozy. This place was all pink including the floor, tables, and the wallpaper had these green plants over it. Shelves were on the wall that were filled with a lot of real plants. I also loved the seating because of the pink booth along the wall.
I ordered the Horchata Matcha and I was so intrigued because I’d never thought those two things could be combined. They have very different flavor profiles so I wanted to know what the drink would taste like. It was two of my favorite things so I immediately gravitated towards it. I’ve always loved horchata ever since I was little because of the cinnamon flavor. And I more recently started loving matcha because of its earthy taste. The drink was so good; I loved the taste of it and even wanted to return for more. I loved the cinnamon combined with the green flavor of matcha. I recommend you check this place out if you’re a matcha lover. They have so many more drinks like the Strawberry Matcha which also sounded really good.
Pacific Beach Fish Shop
I wanted to stop by for a quick bite before dinner, so we decided to check out the Pacific Beach Fish Shop. I am a fan of fish and chips so this was a must for me. After doing some research I ultimately decided on this place because I liked the casual feel to it, and they also carry the freshest fish. Along with the fish and chips I also ordered some calamari. The food was scrumptious, to say the least. The fish and chips were so crunchy and flavorful. The fish was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. It was also very affordable, for example, the fish and chips were about $16 and it was a good amount of food. The tartar sauce made it even better. I definitely recommend checking this place out for a quick bite.
Cesarina
The last stop after walking and exploring all the shops was dinner at Cesarina. I loved the decor and the feel of the restaurant because it felt secluded and like you were eating pasta in Italy. I found that what gave this restaurant this feel was the outdoor seating with the plants hanging from the top of the terrace. This restaurant had so many pasta dishes to choose from. For your order, you choose your preferred pasta shape. For example, I chose the rigatoni shape and chose from a selection of different sauces. I chose the “Pomodoro Fresco” sauce, a fresh tomato sauce with Parmigiano and burrata cheese, with a little pesto. I absolutely loved the pasta because of the pesto, and I just love pasta in general. Check out this place if you love Italian food and are looking for somewhere to have dinner in the San Diego area.
This is only a little taste of what San Diego has to offer. There are so many more things left to check out while you’re there. So, make sure to make the most of the time you spend there!
