Have you ever felt like you needed someone to talk to? Here at Epifania, we wanted to provide some guidance around looking for a therapist. It can be daunting and can take time but there are affordable ways to seek out counseling.
Before you seek out a therapist, think about the areas you are focusing on in your life that also need the most support. Who your therapist can make a huge difference as well. Do you want your therapist to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community? Do you want your therapist to be a person of color? A woman? Or a man? Disabled like you? Those specifics make a huge difference in how safe you will feel when seeking a therapist who is there for you and only you.
Once you’ve identified who you want your therapist to be, the next step is to search as many directories available.
Before you suss out the right fit, it’s important to be prepared with questions to interview your future therapist. Don’t stop at choosing them because you can afford them (via insurance or not). You’ll have to interview them. The following sample of questions will provide a holistic view of their approach and also, how they are taking care of themselves.
1. What’s your availability during the day and evening?
2. What are your fees and do you accept insurance?
3. How long do you typically work with clients?
4. What do you enjoy about being a therapist?
5. How do you think you’ll be able to help me?/ Do you use to dealing with issues similar to mine?
6. Are you a leader vs. a follower?
7. What are your strengths as a therapist?
8. Have you been in therapy?
9. Is it possible to get in touch with you between appointments?
10. In working with a patient or client, do you tend to be more directive or more like a consultant to the patient or client?
The responses to these questions will lead you further to an understanding of your future therapist and how they will be able to support you.
Be patient with this process. You may have a dozen consults with therapists before you are compatible with someone that meets your criteria. Trust the process. When you finally land your dream therapist, it’ll be worth it.
