Since the 1990s, Billboard has celebrated its biggest Latin music artists, producers, and executives. This year was no different. In honor of the 30 years of Billboard Latin Music Week, Billboard hosted its annual conference virtually during four consecutive days from October 20-23, along with their Premios Billboard, their annual award show which celebrates Latin music. The immersive experience was dedicated to Latin music and featured back-to-back star-studded panels, including Jennifer Lopez and Maluma’s conversation on music and movies to Los Tigres del Norte and Becky G’s timely discussion on the importance of voting.

One of Billboard’s Latin Music Week panels called “On The Rise” focused on the newest voices in Latin pop, urban, and pop. During the conversation, Latin Billboard’s Assistant Editor, Jessica Roiz spoke with Camilo, Cazzu, Rauw Alejandro, and Sech. These four up-and-coming Latin acts who have risen to the top of Billboard charts discussed how they discovered their sound are handling fame, and pushing the boundaries in the pop, urban, trap genres.

Colombian singer and producer, Camilo kicked things off by speaking about his big break and moment internationally within the music.

“That’s an interesting question because I would love to think that it was thanks to a song or a specific thing,” said Camilo. “But for me and maybe for my mates, entering the international market was a holy moment for me. It was like my entire life clicked from a place of honesty. I opened myself without faking anything. I started to be my authentic self, and let my songs be whatever my heart wanted to say and have a solid connection with the audience. And for me, more than a song it was more about a disposition of Camilo as an artist.”

Representing Puerto Rico, Rauw Alejandro mentioned how he couldn’t pinpoint one exact moment but did state that each song in his career has been doing its own thing.

“My career has been step by step. There wasn’t a song in particular. If anything, each song has given me a push to the next step,” Rauw adds. “The process of each artist is unique and in my case, it has been step by step.”

Midway toward the conversation, Panamanian singer, Sech touched on the importance of collaborating with other artists.

“First of all, it’s a dream to collaborate with other artists you’ve been listening to. I’m sure my colleagues can relate, especially if you’ve been listening to them from a young age,” Sech mentioned. “In my case, I have three songs with DY and I never thought I would even get an outro or intro with him. I feel very proud. This fills my soul, and on the business side, we share fans, we learn new things. I’ve had the opportunity to be in the studio with artists with a lot of trajectories. And these are life experiences.”

Argentine rapper and singer, Cazzu talked about how she’s dealt with fame and even offered some advice to aspiring artists who would like to make it in the music industry.

“I think it’s very important to know that there’s a business and industry in the middle, but your values and morality is not for sale,” she said. For the people that are doing music and starting, don’t get caught up in the money part. It’s always more important to have respect and artistic solidity, and everything else comes after that.”

Rauw added that while fame is great, it comes to a certain extent. ‘Fame’ “it can psychologically affect you a lot, but the secret remains in remaining loyal to your vision and what you give,” he said.

The Puerto Rican singer closed out the panel by saying the best advice he’s ever received was to always be hungry and willing to learn so you can be great. “A musician once told me ‘forget about everything, just eat the studio, eat the studio for breakfast and dinner. You’re going to develop yourself as an artist and get to the next level.”
