How To Celebrate Pride Anywhere & Everywhere
Whether you are at the club, managing a fun-filled parade, or attending a found-family reunion — Pride month is the time for celebration and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ community.
But – there are plenty of ways to commemorate the rainbow family and its intersectionality, whether it’s a quiet get-together or a loud bash.
Here’s how to celebrate Pride from anywhere – and everywhere:
Take part in Pride events (on and offline)
A celebration of the LGBT+ community, Pride events are a fantastic opportunity to attend local parades and parties. More in-person events are happening this year; however, you can still participate online if you can’t be there in person.
Some online 2022 Pride events include:
A live recording of a tour of Christopher Street in New York
A panel discussion about LGBTQ+ film history
For in-person 2022 Pride events, check out:
LA Pride 2022
Houston Pride 2022
New York Pride 2022
Volunteer and/or donate to LGBTQIA+ organizations
As well as celebrating all things queer and colorful, Pride month is also a great time to learn more about the communities and organizers who are fighting the fight for intersectional equality – all year. So this June, take this opportunity to volunteer at a local LGBTQIA+ center or donate to help fund queer Latinx and BIPOC projects and organizations.
Here are some Latinx and other BIPOC LGBTQ+ groups you can donate to:
Latino Equality Alliance
Allgo
The Audre Lorde Project
Incite
Volunteer opportunities at local LGBT+ centers:
The Center, New York
Los Angeles LGBT Center, Los Angeles
The Montrose Center, Houston
Wear your Pride
This Pride month, make a conscious effort to wear your Pride on your sleeve — or on your hat, bag, or T-shirt. Whether you decide to do it subtly or as loud as possible, be visible and proud of your community or show your allyship.
Get together with loved ones
Spending Pride with loved ones is essential. Whether that means going to a parade or staying in to have a quiet get-together, make some quality time with your queer friends and chosen family. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Pride month, despite what you may see on social media. So make it your own, reach out to your inner LGBTQIA+ circle, and host your own celebration.
Although we have come such a long way in how people view the LGBTQIA+ community, we still have further to go.
With more events happening across the country, it feels as though COVID is a thing of the past. However, for many LGBTQIA+ folks celebrating Pride can be an isolating experience, especially if they live in an environment where queerness isn’t fully understood.
If you’re part of the rainbow collective or have a loved one, make sure you find a way to stay connected, whether watching events online, educating yourself on LGBTQIA+ experience or hanging out with your queer crew.
