Bad Bunny, The Trendsetter By: Lupe Llerenas
Desde Puerto Rico, Para El Mundo (From Puerto Rico to the World)
In just a few years, Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio better known as Bad Bunny has gone from bagging groceries in Puerto Rico to shaping music culture as leader of the Latin trap.
Quickly escalating in the music world, he’s provoking audiences in Latin America and beyond with his penchant for painted nails, bright colors, short-shorts, and rose-tinted sunglasses. From redefining men’s fashion to being very outspoken about Puerto Rico’s politics, this Latin Trap icon has stayed true to himself.
His first big mainstream break in music came when he was featured on Becky G’s 2017 single “Mayores”. Soon after, the singer-rapper picked up more buzz by joining Darell, Ozuna, and Nicky Jam on the 2018 smash hit “Te Bote”. To say the least, he was just getting started because later that year, Cardi B recruited Bad Bunny for her 2018 chart-topping single “I Like It,” which reached No. 1 in the Latin and Hip-Hop charts.

In late December 2018, the Latin Trap hitmaker dropped his debut album “X100pre,” which featured Drake on the single “MÌA” and won “Best Urban Music Album” at the Latin Grammy Awards. In 2019, Bad Bunny released a joint album with fellow Latin artist, J Balvin titled “Oasis,” and earlier this year, J.Lo invited Bad Bunny and J Balvin to join her and Shakira during their Super Bowl Halftime Show performance.
In March 2020, he released “YHLQMDLG,” which finished as 2020’s No. 1 Latin album. Though live music halted in 2020, that didn’t stop him from connecting with fans. He was constantly on Instagram Live with fans and he even surprised fans with a virtual concert in September 2020 in New York, where he also showed his appreciation for healthcare workers.
2021, he dropped several hits including “Dakiti” and teamed up with the Kings of Bachata, Aventura for “Volvi.” Most recently, he embarked on his El Ultimo Tour del Mundo Tour across the states and will soon take on another tour, The World’s Hottest Tour in the summer of 2022.
