BECKY G, MLB All Star Weekend Recap By: Sarah Cain

Becky G and her smash hits took to bat for last weekend’s MLB All-Star Saturday Extra Innings concert hosted by MGM Grand. The Mexican American breakout star headlined the concert at Dodger’s Stadium on July 16th.

The pop star graced the stage with her tried and true classics, coupled with a slew of newer released hits, appealing to all Becky G stans both past and present alike. Her performance was highlighted by how much her vocals have improved since her hit song ‘Shower” first debuted in 2014. A crowd favorite nonetheless, she taunted her fans to sing along to the song that famously put her on the map when she released it at the ripe age of 17 years old; “ I know you guys know it, you don’t have to be ashamed. Just sing it!”
This type of camaraderie with her fan base only reiterated how dedicated she is and was to the long-standing career she has built within the music industry. Despite her veteran history within the field, she is nowhere near done yet.
Hailing from Inglewood, CA, Becky G quickly gained notoriety for singing covers that she would upload online. After catching the attention of Hollywood producer Dr. Luke, she signed her first record deal with RCA Records. From then on, it’s been an explosive career since.

G has proven her artistry as she is currently the only female to have been crowned Favorite Latina Artist of the Year for the American Music Awards, a staggering two years in a row. However, this type of recognition is nothing new to the 25-year-old singer-songwriter. Along with her AMA nominations and wins, G has raked in a multitude of other nominations from award shows including, but not limited to, The Billboard Music Award for Top Latin Song “Mayores” in 2018, ASCAP for winning song “Sin Pijama” “Bubalu,” “Mayores,” and “Ram, Ram, Ram” over the years of 2019 to 2022, and finally her most celebrated success at the Billboard Latin Music Awards regarding her slew of nominations ranging from Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Female Top Latin Artist of the Year, and Social Artist of the Year during a whopping 2015-2021 time stretch.

The accolades don’t stop there. Her global smash hit “MAMIII” with Karol G, has amassed over 750 million streams worldwide since release and is certified DIAMOND by RIAA Latin. Her debut album “Mala Santa” has been certified Platinum eight times in the United States as highlighted by MLB Allstar Saturday.

G has a devoted fan base, alluding to her popularity as a Mexican American superstar as she garners fans from both Latin American countries and the United States. Her songs, while almost majorly in Spanish, have carried an undeniable amount of traction for their upbeat candace and hit capability.

As for G and her life, she lives a simple one. As noted in her PopSugar editorial, her main premise as an artist is to pay homage to her grandparents and her culture, letting all the like influence her path as an artist and let those same influences infuse their way into her music. As she passionately proclaimed,

“Now that I’m in the spotlight and have kick-started my dream, my responsibility is to share my experiences with other young Latinos. I want to show them we are capable of anything, that race shouldn’t put us in a box. That although we are a “minority,” we are the majority. We are everywhere. We are family. We must stay driven and keep hope, and we must never lose sight of our dreams.”

While Becky G was not initially on my radar, I’m excited to follow along her journey as she continues on within the music industry. I’ve always admired and respected the artists that are able to both rebrand and grow within their craft, as she’s been dedicated to building her career as a singer/songwriter since she was a teenager. Bright things are in store for Becky G and we are here for it!
